mauricio_iconWe interview Columbian corsetmaker Mauricio Bernal about steel, fabric, making his grandmother's house into his studio, and the difficulty of getting busks in South America. Interviewed by Marion McNealy, translation by Elizabeth Barnes.

1 - ¿Cuándo empezaste a coser?

1.     When did you begin sewing?

I started out in the world of corsetry seven years ago but I began in the world of fashion at age 10.  I am 24 and believe me; I love what I do and how I do it.  I have participated in fashion shows, my themes are inspired by the world of corsets and fetish clothing.  Twelve days ago I presented a couture collection called "Utopia" in Europe (scroll down).

2.     When and why did you begin working with corsets?

I started out in the world of corsetry seven years ago in my grandmother’s house, amidst antiques and treasures that she guarded zealously.  After her death I renovated the house, making it my studio, filling it with modern materials and technology.  I started working in corsetry because of the history; I love the complex and complicated cuts that contort a woman’s body into a perfect silhouette, which is the desire of every woman.  Beauty has a high price and women are willing to pay it; I’m not speaking economically, but of the suffering and squeezing endured for hours at the hands of a corset.

3.     Is that a large community of corset makers in Columbia?

The community of corset makers is very small, and I’m not trying to toot my own horn, but the clients I have in Columbia say I’m the only one who makes such magnificent corsets.

I use antique cuts and ancestral techniques that were once used.  So far I’m the only one in Colombia that makes such structured and elaborate corsets.

4.     Are there any problems in finding the materials needed to make your corsets?

The only problem I face with materials is the busk.  They don’t exist in this country and no one knows what they are.  I really suffer because it’s so limiting. I’ve always wanted to use them.  Other than that I lack for nothing. We have a great variety of materials and adornments here.  The only thing is the busk, they just don’t exist in Columbia.

5.     What was the most ambitious corset that you’ve made? Craziest design, strangest materials?

A very ambitious one was the chance to make a reproduction of a Madonna corset, I was able to make an exact replica.  Another interesting one was a modification to a seventeenth century corset.  I put in cups at the bust and flares that draped completely over the hips made of silk and tulle.
I used the materials to make hand embroidered, jewel incrusted handcrafted footwear.

6.     What do you think are the most important abilities when making corsets?

The key is taking good measurements, having a good strategy for designing patterns, the mental ability to take risks in terms of cuts and placement of pins, and knowing how to give your corset a good cut that defines the waist. I think everything is important to achieve a beautiful corset.  Perfection, but above all keep it tidy.

7.     What layers do you use in your corsets?

I use jean or a fabric that I have hand made by artisans here in Colombia.  I have it made exclusively for corsets.  It’s passed through textile treatments that make it stronger.  This fabric allows for clean cuts and designs.  ow many layers I use really depends, sometimes three for simpler designs, but the majority of the time I use five layers.

8. Do you use steels, spirals or a combination in your corsets?

On some occasions I do use steels, but only in the front, because as I said before, in Colombia there aren’t any busks.

I replace the busk with steels, giving it the form of spoon or straight shaped busk.  I try to avoid putting steels in the sides because with movement such as sitting, ladies often cause them to buckle or deform.

I do use spirals for the rest of the corset and sometimes I combine various plastic rods that are flexible and resilient.  I have also used a variety of flexible metal that has given me very good results.

9.     What are you working on now?

I am working independently.  I have my studio and my shop where I sell my corsets, wedding dresses, and couture dresses.  It’s going very well for me, I’ve gotten some recognition for my work and I plan on continuing.  I have my grandmothers knowledge, my research, and my books on antique corsets.

10. What techniques do you want to experiment with in the future?

At the moment I’m experimenting with acetates, crystals, glass, metal, and real and natural fibers such as trees, etc.  I’ve been working with these materials and everything has turned out perfectly with excellent and unexpected results.
