Danielle writes:
Dear FR,
I am a complete beginner when it comes to stay-making, and I have a question about fitting that I'm hoping you could help me with.
All the corset patterns I have seen, including your drafting tutorial, say that when fitting or measuring for a corset you should wear a well-fitting bra, to lift the bust into the proper position. I have small breasts that don't droop at all, so might I be able to get away without this? Or would it be a good idea to try to find a bra that not only fits and lifts but lacks padding that would throw the fit off?
Thank-you very much!
Sincerely,
Danielle
Your instinct is right - if putting on a bra doesn't change the shape or position of your bust significantly, then you may be able to get away with it - use your judgement! But if you're looking for a suitable bra to fit in, then yes, you'll need one without padding unless you plan to pad the corset too!!

Sherry
Here's a great site for free old needlework and pattern books, The Antique Pattern Library. I just stumbled across it and thought this would be worth passing on.

Patricia asks
What is planned for the DPP on FR? I haven't seen anything yet on making stays or a corset for the Natural Form Era.
Patricia
Patricia,
We've got a whole series of articles planned on stay-making and on Natural Form Era corsets starting in the August issue. We'll be covering the other parts of the underwear repertoire in the next few months.
