I'm putting bone casings on the inside of my 1908 Transitional. Because of the amount of topstitching on the outside, I'd much prefer to sew with the right side up, to keep everything looking tidy. My current solution is to mark the line of the casing with painter's tape, then baste along that so it's visible on both sides. I pin and then baste in the bone casing following the basted line, and stitch the casing down one side following the original basted line with the foot. The coutil I'm using is quite heavy, so this is a fairly laborious process.

Do you have a better idea? Is this something you've tackled? Did you try it and now you just sew from the back side and damn the consequences?

I just stitched from the inside following the the bone casings. I don't know if this will work but for the next one I'm thinking of marking the stitch line on the bone casings, then pinning and basting following the marked stitch line. That way I can give stitching from the top side a try. Could work??????

That's what I wound up doing. I'll go into it more with the next sewalong article, but I marked the casings with masking tape on the outside of the corset, basted along one edge, took the tape off, turned it over and basted the casings in to the inside, turned it back over and stitched the casing from the outside using the basting line as a guide. Then I used the first stitching as a guide for the second set of stitching, put that in, and picked out the basting. It's definitely not perfect inside, but it let me pay much more attention to the way the top stitching looked on the outside.
