TOPIC: Antique corset

Antique corset 2 years 4 months ago #298

Hi everyone,
I recently acquired and antique corset and i am trying to do some research on it. Id like to know the era and of course more about the designer. It is stamped on the inside Me Bouillon. HABANA it is a single layer two color brocade coutil. It has both machine and hand sewing on it, it appears to have have either never been worn or hardly worn at all. There is a 2.5 inch lace at the top with yellow silk ribbon run through it and a large decorative silk ribbon at the top center. The busk is a shaped busk, and is hidden by more lace. Also the posts have been set through eyelets in the coutil. the stays are a combination of metal (1 large one, and two on either side of the eyelets per side) and the rest are non magnetic, my guess is whale bone. The corset is flossed in silk thread. There is also a tufted, perhaps a long pile velvet fabric that has been applied to the bottom 2 inches of the corset on the outside, and then on the inside of the busk, and at the top of the wide metal bones on the inside.

i have include a couple of pics any help would be greatly appreciated

First, a couple of moderation things - I deleted your duplicate post; there were no comments on it. Also, you can attach multiple pictures to a single post. There should be a button under the first upload slot for adding another attachment.

Second, that is a lovely corset! If you haven't already googled the stamp, that is always a good place to start. It looks like a late Victorian or early Edwardian style. If you can get a photo of it on a dress form (or pillow), that would make it easier to see the shape and date it. You can also go to an online corset museum like Laracorsers (currently undergoing renovations, it seems), the V&A, or the Met, and look for corsets that have a similar cut. That can be the best way to date a mystery corset. Good luck! Let us know if you find anything out!
