TOPIC: Hello!

Hello! 2 years 3 months ago #316

Hi everyone!

After sewing dresses etc for the last few years I took the plunge and made my first corset this Autumn. I'm officially hooked!!!!

I'm really interested in handfinishing and decorating my pieces and have got a few ideas. However I'm after a little advice from some more seasoned pro's! I'm interested in making a closed fronted corset with a large hand embroidered design across the front. I'm struggling to work out how to incorporated the boning channels though. Would it be best to sew the channels and then carefully embroider over them, making sure I don't close them up, or embroider and sew them later? The later option I'm concerned it may show through the pattern too much?

Many thanks and thank you for a great website!

No confusion! How did you decide to do it? Enquiring minds want to know!

If I were doing a project like that, I can think of several ways to make it work. The simplest might be a double-layer corset, with the casings on the inner layer and the embroidery on the outer. Benefit to that would be that you could use any fabric you liked on the outer layer, which would make embroidery a lot easier.

If you have the pattern pretty well planned out before you start, you could begin with the fabric flat and the pattern traced on, embroider all the big areas (allowing for seams and bone casings, then put it together and just fill in the blanks.
