In Beatrix Potter's classic story the Tailor of Gloucester, countless talented little mice completed an ornate waistcoat in the night when the tailor fell ill.

In Disney's Cinderella, a family of little paws likewise laboured through the wee hours to fashion a gown fit for a queen.

And today, here at Harman Hay Publications, an army of tiny paws are clapping in glee that you have decided to join (or re-join!) our happy throng. They are scurrying up and down the varnished floors of the Harman Hay Publications office preparing your special Membership, their little fingers and toes pattering across tiny keyboards as they dream of the fabulous handmade corsets, stays, gowns or linens that you will soon be creating and wearing with the help of what you will learn with us.

Meanwhile, our quick How To Use This Site guide will get you started with us and help you to manage your membership.

A warm welcome to you, and here's to your sewing success!

Best wishes,

Cathy Hay and the Harman Hay Publications team

Interested in writing for Foundations Revealed?

Foundations Revealed is a weekly online magazine featuring the design and construction of historical and modern corsetry, brassieres and lingerie. It is produced by Harman Hay Publications. We give our members the resources to make excellent corsets and lingerie, pushing their artistic boundaries and exploring new ground.

What We Publish:

  • Tutorials
  • Complete projects step-by-step
  • Studies of antique or vintage corsets or lingerie
  • How-to guides to various elements of running your own small creative business

Challenges

Have you been inspired by our past corset challenges such as Joanne Arnett's 1904 Savoye corset and Katarina Vuksic's Y&N Diagonal corset? Are you looking for a challenge to stretch and grow your skills?  Every 3-4 months we post a link on Facebook and Twitter to a corset patent or material that we are challenging our readers to take on.

Typically, the challenge is done in two articles: the first one covers the patterning and fitting, and the second one covers the construction, with a final look and what the maker would change about the corset if s/he were to tackle it again. Sometimes patterning and fitting are two separate articles, especially when it is a complex pattern. The goal is a fantastically fitting corset based on an original patent.

You might want to have a look at some of our past patent challenges to see how others have tackled this. Examples include: 1868 Madame Foy corset, 1882 Strauss patent 271377, Jenni's Hearts series and Fannings 1878 Patent Corset (probably the best example). If an article in the Corset Patterns section has a diagram for an icon, it is typically a patent challenge.

What we're looking for right now

At this time, we're looking for articles on the underwear and corsetry of the following eras: Tudor, Stuart, Medieval, Renaissance, Regency, Early Victorian, Teens and 20th c Vintage and Modern. We particularly welcome articles on these topics:

  • Patternmaking, drafting, adjustment, and scaling to your size (especially plus sizes)
  • Design
  • Customers and Business
  • Fitting
  • Studies of extant garments
  • Underwear (shirts, chemises, shifts, drawers, knickers, petticoats, etc.)
  • Creating a corset from a patent diagram (contact the Editor for ideas)
  • Complete beginning-to-end projects
  • Period authentic techniques explained for modern readers, eg authentic seam finishes, "fiddly stuff"
  • Decorative techniques
  • Working with challenging or difficult materials (leather, metal, special fabrics)

Word Count and Tone

We like our articles to be at least 2-3000 words long and 25-30 pictures apiece.  Your article should be written in either British or American English. You will need to keep our international audience in mind by using simple, clear sentences that aren’t too long wherever possible. Of course, good grammar and spelling is a must.

The tone of the piece should be friendly, yet professional. As for pitch, picture the reader as a seamstress who has a moderate amount of knowledge and experience in sewing, corsetmaking and/or costuming. She is enthusiastic to learn more, but is often frustrated to find that only the basics are available in existing books and online. Our aim is to teach more advanced and professional techniques, but to break them down and make them simple.

Image Sources

If you are including pictures from historical sources, you must include where you got them from.  Good public domain sources of photos are books published pre-1923 from Google Books, Archive.org,  some images on Wikimedia Commons (check the license) , National Gallery of Art Open Access Images, and the Rijksmuseum Museum website (most are public domain, check the license), Library of Congress’s Photo website, Flickr Commons and some images at the Metropolitan Museum, New York.

The image must be allowed to be used commercially.  There are other image sources available. If you need assistance finding appropriate images, contact the Editor.

While you may not be able to use a particular picture (such as one from a museum), we can always link to it from the article.

How to Submit an Article Proposal

The submissions process starts when you emailThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.with an article proposal, along with a link to your website, blog, or a Facebook page or community where your work is displayed (or attached photos of relevant items you've made). The article should usually be new and as yet unpublished. The proposal will detail the subject of the article, its scope, its approximate length, and for larger projects, a project schedule with milestones and deadlines.

The Editor will then reply and let you know whether we are interested in your proposal, with available due dates and a contract.

Once you have chosen your submission deadline, it goes on our publication calendar and we are counting on you to keep your commitment. The Editor will email you a reminder 2-3 weeks in advance of the due date.

If a you are not able to deliver an article, we stress that you should let the Editor know as soon as possible so that we have time to arrange a replacement.

If you confirm that you will deliver an article as promised when we send out the reminder email, and then you fail to deliver it, all of your future articles will be pulled from the schedule.

Submitting your Article on the Deadline

Sending large files and pictures for the articles via email is not always easy, so we encourage you to use Dropbox, which allows up to 2GB of online storage for documents/photos/etc. It’s as easy as downloading a small program to your computer and dragging and dropping your files into the program. It handles the uploading automatically.

The Editor will send you a link to our submissions folder in your reminder email. It’s not a requirement to use it, email is still fine, but if it’s a large number of files, you might find it useful.

Publication

Publication of your piece will be made up to six months after receipt. Unless stated, you will be expected not to disclose fine detail of as-yet unpublished future articles, future developments or confidential aspects of business that you may help Foundations Revealed develop. However, you are welcome to advertise your involvement with the site and general details such as the subject of the piece.

Your article will be commissioned for Foundations Revealed in particular, but it may be duplicated on Your Wardrobe Unlock'd later, if relevant to both, or in other products we develop.

We reserve the right to omit or edit any work submitted or accepted at any time.

You Retain Intellectual Property Rights

We do not hold any exclusive rights to work published on our websites. The creator retains copyright of both the article and any images supplied. Your article will be published on one or both websites and will remain there as part of the archive of resources. You will be fully credited as the writer in both cases.

Due to the nature of the site as a subscription service and out of fairness to readers, we require that you do not publish your article elsewhere until at least six months have passed from the publication date. After this time, you will be free to publish as you wish. We’d be pleased as punch to see “This article first appeared on www.foundationsrevealed.com".

Payment

As a self-employed writer, you’ll need to invoice us for each payment we make to you. This ensures that there’s an official record of the payment. We cannot pay you until you send this invoice to us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..">This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

It doesn’t need to be anything fancy; it’s fine as long as it includes

  • Your name and address as a header at the top
  • The date (including year)
  • The company you’re invoicing (Harman Hay Publications)
  • The amount
  • A unique invoice number (important!)

Payment rates are UK£60 (currently US$100) per article (or per monthly instalment of a multi- part series). We have prepared a standard invoice template on Google Docs that you can use if you wish.

Student and Senior Memberships

Discounted membership rates are now available for full time students and senior citizens. This page gives details of who qualifies, and how to apply.

Image: Student Orientation by Tulane University Public Relations1 How big is the discount? To which websites does it apply?

If you qualify as a full time student or senior citizen, you will receive a discount of 50% every month until you cancel your membership or cease to be a full time student. The discount is available on whatever membership type you want, whether for just this site, or either of the others, or any combination of two or three sites. Details of Membership types and standard prices for all our websites are available on the signup page. Simply halve the advertised price to determine what you will pay.

2 Who qualifies?

We have designed the Discount Membership to enable those enthusiasts who could not otherwise afford to join the sites to be part of the fun.

Senior citizen status is defined differently in different parts of the world and according to different organisations, so we keep the definition fairly loose - if you can produce a document to demonstrate retired/senior status, that's good enough for us!

Meanwhile, among students, we are not discriminating by institution - high school, college, and University students all qualify, providing that you are in full time education.

Your course does NOT need to be in a related field - site owner Cathy's degree was in Mathematics and Education, but she, too, spent all her free time at Uni sewing!

3 Is the discounted rate available to existing members of the sites, as well as new members?

Yes, of course.

4 So how do I get a Discounted Membership?

Before you begin your subscription and pay (assuming you're new to us), drop us an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.">This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with "STUDENT MEMBERSHIP" or "SENIOR MEMBERSHIP" in the subject line.

Include the following details:

  • Your full name
  • Your username on our sites, if you are a current or former member - if not, just tell us that you're new
  • Proof that you are a student/senior, such as a clear scan of your student ID. (If you're in high school, or a senior, proof of your age is sufficient.)
  • For students, the school/college/university you're attending, and your course name, if you have one
  • For students, proof that you are a student right now, if it isn't already obvious - if there's no date on your ID, you'll need to provide something else to show that it isn't last year's ID that's now expired!
  • For students, details of the end date of your course, ie. the date when you will no longer be a full time student.

5 I have been a member of your sites for a year now, and I've been a student/senior for the last two years. Can you give me a 50% refund for all the membership fees I've paid so far?

No. We simply can't afford to backdate this offer to apply to membership fees already paid. The special rate begins when your application is accepted and you sign up for your Discounted Membership.

Frequently Asked Questions

How the site works

1: What is Foundations Revealed™?
A: This website is not just a one-time standard course or a dry manual, but a motivated, exciting, all-inclusive online corsetmaking college. We offer articles, online classes, resources, help, inspiration and a sense of community for corset makers who have a burning desire to improve their skills - from complete beginners who want to make their first corset to seasoned pros looking for continuing professional development. Our members enjoy a new, unique and exclusive how-to article every week, around 2000 words long with at least 25 photos, as well as unlimited access to our entire archive of classes, tutorials, how-tos, interviews and Q&As - and our exclusive forum.

Details of Membership types and prices for all our websites are available on the signup page.

2: I was a bit surprised to find out that I have to pay to join your website. Where does the money go?
A: Membership fees are there to pay our writers. They are working, professional corsetmakers and highly experienced enthusiasts, who are paid for taking time out of their schedules to share their best and brightest secrets and produce top quality, useful classes. We do not feel that it would be fair to expect them to give away the benefit of their expertise free, or to undertake tightly deadlined work unpaid. Membership fees also pay the five members of staff who keep the site going, plus the costs of hosting, insurance, and so on.

3: Can I share the information on the site with my friends and family?
A: Please feel free to share the free articles, but please do not share our paid services with non-members. Our staff works hard to provide you with quality and content, and they deserve to be paid for their efforts. If you know someone who is interested, please join our affiliate program and encourage them to sign up. You will receive a cash commission for your efforts, and you will allow our site to continue to provide the highest quality corsetmaking information available online.

Your account

4: I just tried to sign into Foundations Revealed™, but my login was rejected.
A: First of all, clear your browser's cache and give it another go, making sure caps lock is off and ensuring that you've spelt your username and password correctly. If you still get an error, email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and tell us exactly what happens, and/or take a screenshot and send it on, and we will get it fixed as soon as we can.

Memberships and payment

5: How do I sign up and register as a member of Foundations Revealed™?
A: Click the Login box on the top right of this page, and hit Subscribe.

6: I don't have a credit card. How do I become a member?
A: Your membership is a recurring payment, so it must be paid by card or via a Paypal account that is linked to a card or bank account. If you don't have a suitable card and you still can't persuade your Paypal account to co-operate, you can buy a one-off gift certificate for yourself, which doesn't recur - Paypal is less picky about those.

7: I used to be a member and cancelled, but now I want to come back. Can I still use my old username and password?
A: Yes, of course, welcome back! Here's how to renew your membership:

  1. Go to your My Account page and log in.
  2. Hit "Add/Renew Subscription" at the top of the page.
  3. Select the new membership type that you want.
  4. Hit "Next" and you'll be taken to Paypal to complete payment.

8: I'm already a member - how do I change my subscription to cover a different site or sites?

You'll need to sign up for a new membership and cancel your "old" one. For example, if you are a member of Foundations Revealed right now, and you want to be a member of Foundations AND Your Wardrobe Unlock'd, you'll need to sign up for a combined Foundations/Wardrobe membership, and then cancel the old Foundations-only membership. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Members Area and log in.
  2. Hit "Add/Renew Subscription" at the top of the page.
  3. Select the new membership type that you want.
  4. Hit "Next" and you'll be taken to Paypal to complete payment.
  5. Now cancel your "old" membership (instructions in question 10, below).

If you have any questions, you'd like some help, or the subscriptions overlap and you'd like a partial refund, drop us an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we'll help take care of it for you.

9: Paypal have emailed me to tell me that my payment failed this month, and now I can't get into Foundations Revealed™. What should I do?
A: Don't panic! Paypal will try the payment multiple times over a period of a few days, so sit tight and it will probably right itself. If it still can't take payment, perhaps because your credit card expired, for example, then it will cancel your membership. Here's what to do if that happens:

  1. Check your Paypal account and ensure that everything's in order (eg your new credit card details are in place).
  2. If you were paying a Special Offer price for your membership, email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for instructions on how to reinstate it before going any further.
  3. Go to your Foundations Revealed™ My Account page and log in.
  4. Hit "Add/Renew Subscription" at the top of the page.
  5. Select the new membership type that you want.
  6. Hit "Next" and you'll be taken to Paypal to complete payment.

10: How do I cancel my membership?
A: We are sorry to see you go! You can cancel your membership yourself in your Paypal account.

  1. Log into your Paypal account as normal.
  2. On the top menu bar, go to Profile > My Money.
  3. Find "My Pre-Approved Payments" in the list of options and click on "Update", on the right.
  4. Click on Harman Hay Publications.
  5. Hit "Cancel" and confirm by clicking "Yes."

You will continue to have access to the members-only pages until the date you paid up to. In other words, if you signed up on December 15th and you cancel on August 3rd, you will continue to have access until August 14th - the day before your membership for the next month would have been due.

11: I meant to cancel my membership but forgot. I cancelled now, can I have a refund?
A: Unfortunately, we do not offer full or partial refunds for late cancellations. You must cancel your membership BEFORE the next payment date in order to not be charged. Once you have cancelled you will continue to have access to the members-only pages until the date you are paid up to.

Recommend us to your friends and earn money

Simply tell a friend how much you enjoy Foundations Revealed™ and we'll pay you a generous commission after they sign up! This applies for every friend you refer - refer twelve friends, for example, and you'll find yourself with a year's membership paid for - and over the holiday season, the commissions are even better! Find out more about becoming an affiliate here.

12: I referred someone to your site, but I forgot to use my affiliate link. Can I still get credit?
A: No, unfortunately you must use your affiliate link in order to receive affiliate credit. This is necessary for accounting and tax purposes.
