I love all kinds of corsets but I do have a preference for the Edwardian era.
The description of the geometry theme mentioned fractals. That made me think back to this 1902 corset patent from Daniel Kops. This patent has been in the back of my mind for a long time. It featured a twofold “architecture”: (1) a bust area made of three “V” shaped panels that are fully contained within one another, (2) a hip area made mostly of alternating concave and convex shapes. Beyond the geometric aspects of recursion and repetition, I was fascinated by the organic nature of the curves. In my [crazy] mind, it was a perfect match for the competition!
My project is based on this patent. Beyond adapting the corset to my morphology, I also modified the overall design to my needs. I wanted to avoid the very flat front and “monobreast” look of Edwardian corsets. That is why I created an overbust extension that would cup each breast individually. I also simplified and extended the hip area, and made it curvier. A few mock-ups later, I was ready to start the final piece. I considered using different color fabrics or piping to emphasize the shape of each pane, but finally decided to stick with simplicity.
My main regret would be the fabric choice; working with satin was a constant struggle. But overall, my journey with this project brought me a lot of joy!
