Actually if I get a carbide cutting wheel for it that could be ideal. Thanks so much, I'll try that out!

It's a long shot, but how abut a Dremel?

Mark off the length and grind through just above until the excess can be broken off. Continue grinding until you get to the desired length and round off the edges and any burrs.

Sorry to not have a useful answer, but wanted to say I'm also interested if anyone can recommend a tool tough enough for this job. Because, indeed, I pretty much murdered my poor bolt cutters by cutting through wide flat steel once upon a time.

I'm after some advice - how could I shorten a 1" wide spring steel bone like this?
www.venacavadesign.co.uk/Products/Wide_Dipped_Steels.html

I make corsets with swing hooks at the front a lot and slip one of these each side behind the swing hooks for support (I don't drill through the spring steel though, so the hooks are not fixed to the steel)
I'm asking because rather than buying the specific length I need each time I bought 100 longer steels so that I could trim them to size each time, which was a cheaper option when I use the swinghooks regularly in my work.
I'm looking at a few inches to cut down, in some cases (e.g underbusts) so using an industrial grinder or something to remove the excess may not be a practical option. With standard busks I use my bolt cutters but they're not touching the 1" wide steel.
