I pretty much understand how to construct a corset, but my dilemma is how to sew on appliqués and lace to the top layer of the corset. What type of sewing or stitch do you use to keep lace in place so that it won’t move or shift while it is being worn? Do I use same color thread as my lace/appliqué or do you use clear nylon thread to hand stitch them in place?

Please help...

Thank You so much.

I'm not as expert as some people here, but, first of all, if you are a member you will find articles on these subjects in the "corset decoration" section.

Personally, when I add lace at the top of the corset I handstitch it at the end of the process: I baste it to the bias using a color that blends with the lace (if the contrast between the lace and the bias color is too strong you may want to use an invisible thread). I prefer to baste it because it is easier to remove if the lace gets dirty or damaged and the bias doesn't risk to tear (especially if it's satin bias).

If you are going to line your corset, add the lace before you add the lining. Stitch the lace down with very small stitches showing on the outside, connected by longer stitches on the inside. Depending on the future of the garment, these inside stitches can be very long, even a few inches. Long stitches are more likely to snag, though, so that's best for clothes that will eventually be lined or that won't be worn often (sample garments, for example). If the garment needs to last longer and the stitching won't be covered, best to keep the float stitches between 1/2" - 1" (1 - 2cm). Basically, there's no wrong way to do it - as long as the applique stays on and doesn't sag, you're good.

Use a thread that blends well with the lace.
