one questions though...Is the interfacing you mentioned fusible on both sides? (effectively making the fashion and strength layer one piece?) or, do you fuse it to the fashion fabric then baste the fashion layer to the coutil?

Sorry if I'm being slow on the up take with this...

No it's a standard fusible interfacing fusible just on one side. It makes the outer layer more stiff and you will not have too much bulk on the seams like you would have if you use 2 strength layers. I have heard for those fusible on both sides, but I haven't tried them.

The first method I was taught was using a double strength layer. It gives quite a stiff corset but it does work for some styles, however it does make for bulky seams.

You could try Laura Loft's method here: www.foundationsrevealed.com/articles/cor...et-start-to-finish-6
which uses a double coutil layer with the seam allowance of one removed therefore reducing the bulk and helping your turn of cloth issues.

Thanks! I'll have to try that when I start a new corset! Right now, I've had to put sewing and corsetry on hold so I can finish this semester

I've been having that same issue. I didn't even realize I was trying to make a four-layer corset, I considered the fashion layer and the strength layer to be a single layer but my other strength layer and lining as two separate layers. Mine looks exactly like your picture, and I have been struggling with getting the seams to line up as well. I'm new to corset making and still learning and since I am starting with canvas instead of coutil I was concerned a single strength layer would not be enough. Think I'll be starting over tonight with the one strength layer and see how mine goes. Good luck, though!
